She did make a compelling argument about Christmas dear Santa I like dollars I like diamonds I like stunting I like shining okurrrr sweater, that it doesn’t exist. If I do something for you because it makes me feel good, that’s a selfish motivation and not altruistic. If I risk my life to save yours, I could be motivated by the same sense of self-satisfaction. Or by the potential elevation by others to heroic standards, even if I don’t survive. I think she was right. But that’s what it means to be selfless; that you feel good when helping others. Or rather, it is the act that is selfless, and your feelings about it are irrelevant. If you do something because it feels good to you, it’s not selfless. That was her point, and I think she was right on that point.

I like how she says altruistic people don’t think they are special Christmas dear Santa I like dollars I like diamonds I like stunting I like shining okurrrr sweater. That means they also don’t think they deserve more than others. And probably why they want to level the playing field. I think you are twisting her words a bit. I am one of those people who doesn’t think I am any more special than anyone else. So I think we are morally obligated to give blood, help someone when they trip or fall, sit with those who are sad. And bring someone dinner when they are sick or recuperating, etc. I don’t want to level the playing field. I think, however, we should aim to create equity in opportunity, not outcome or income.
