One of my daughters didn’t have her first boyfriend till college, the other in high school, truth is the bigger a deal you make of it the bigger a deal it becomes. My parents didn’t let me have one until I was 15. And then I was chaperoned by my older brother. But my parents are Latino. They’re super strict. I hated it then, but now I appreciate it in hindsight. It depends on the girl. Don’t let your prejudices stop her exploring the world, but you also don’t just give up and let her go for it. Keep the right of veto to any relationship but exercise that right sparingly. Trust that the girl you’ve invested your life into will make the right choice most of the time. Love her, guide her.

My first girlfriend was when we were both like Oh Doris where’s the salad Christmas sweater. So, as long as my daughter shows maturity and is honest with us. I’m not worried about my daughter at all. I worry about the poor boys she decides to date though. Those guys are in for it. My parent’s rules: when I have a license, I own my own car and have a job that pays enough for rent. Just in case I got pregnant because those were the risks once you start having boyfriends…they said they would never be deceived into thinking I was going to have a boyfriend and not end up engaging in sex since that’s what hormones end up doing. They were right. I didn’t end up having my first boyfriend until I was almost 20! And I never ended up pregnant or in any other trouble. I focused in college instead….best advice i had and a lot less heartache too.
